In 2001, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer released “Legally Blonde” starring Reese Witherspoon. The movie was an instant classic, its message of female empowerment and staying true to yourself resonating with worldwide audiences. Its popularity sparked various sequels and spin-offs, and the movie has been a household favorite for the past 25 years. But what many people don’t know is that Elle Wood’s adventures don’t simply end on screen; they jump on stage. This year, “Legally Blonde: The Musical” took to the Spaulding stage.
When the spring musical was announced, the Laguna community was ecstatic. That excitement only grew as opening night approached, with all four shows completely selling out (a feat which the Laguna theater has not seen for over five years). Senior Amelia Noble was among these enthusiasts, saying, “I grew up watching the movie … it’s been one of my favorite films of all time. ”
But through this year’s production, students had the chance to see the classic story in an entirely new way. “I think [my] excitement was shared with a lot of my peers who also loved the movie but were maybe unfamiliar with the stage adaptation,” Amelia said. Many people love the movie, but experiencing it onstage will give it a different energy, with live singing, fun choreography, and audience interaction making the story feel more immediate and engaging.
“The stage adaptation is really faithful to the movie, and that’s why it feels so near and dear to many of us early 2000s rom-com lovers,” Amelia said. The movie’s popularity creates an inherent excitement surrounding the show. But beyond the performance itself, “Legally Blonde” being this year’s performance up on the Spaulding stage brought a larger audience and a broader sense of connection to the theater and Laguna Blanca community as a whole.
Yet, even those unfamiliar with the 2000s classic were able to fully enjoy the performance. Senior Baylor Wilson, who had never seen “Legally Blonde” before, noted his appreciation for the excitement of the show, saying “I liked how engaged the actors and audiences both were.”
The production also featured a strong senior presence, with 12 seniors participating both on stage and behind the scenes to bring this vibrant show to life. The sheer amount of senior involvement attracted seniors like Baylor to come see the show. “The fact that there were so many seniors in the show made me want to see it,” Baylor said. “I had never been to one of the musicals before, so I thought it would be great to go support them.”
“One thing that sets this show apart is that it’s a very ensemble-heavy show,” said Amelia. With the movie’s popularity, many students have been eager to get involved in bringing this classic story to life. “‘Legally Blonde’ has given a lot of opportunities for a lot of different people to take on different roles in really over-the-top, colorful ways, which I think audiences are going to love,” Amelia said.
Junior Leo Michaud echoes this sentiment, saying, “You get really close to castmates and crew members who you may not have been close with outside of the theater.”
As this year’s assistant director, Leo shares insights into the production experience from behind the scenes. Working behind the scenes, Leo was able to help shape the show’s final form while watching it all come together for a live audience. Leo says, “being a part of the rehearsal process from the outside allows me to be more hands-on. I get to make decisions that help form the play itself, and that’s a unique experience.”
But what sets this show apart from others on the Spaulding stage is not only its familiarity and nostalgia to the audience, but, ironically, also the surprises it holds. “Legally Blonde: The Musical” offered plenty of unexpected moments for the audience—Leo says that he was “super excited to see the reactions from the audience when the actors make some of the out-of-the-ordinary jokes that are in this show.”
Some of these surprises came from the songs themselves, which go beyond what is seen in the original film. Numbers like “Ireland” and “Gay or European” add humor, personality, and theatrical flair that are not present in the movie, allowing characters to be explored in more exaggerated, expressive ways. These moments also give supporting characters a chance to step into the spotlight, expanding their roles beyond what audiences may expect. The stage adaptation leans into comedy and spectacle, creating moments that feel fresh even for audience members who know the story well.
One of the most endearing aspects of “Legally Blonde” is its fashion, an element that makes the musical fun for actors and audiences alike. Elle Woods’s fashion is her form of self-expression that reflects her confidence and individuality. The musical brings this to life through bold costumes that visually track her journey. “I am so excited for audiences to see the wonderful early 2000s-inspired outfits that our costume designer, Flynn, has curated for this show, namely being Elle’s numerous quick-changes (some of them being on-stage) into some really fabulous dresses and outfits and lots and lots and lots of pink,” said Amelia.
From record-selling shows to senior involvement, from energetic choreography to catchy songs, “Legally Blonde: The Musical” left a lasting impression on the Laguna Blanca community, proving that its story continues to resonate both on screen and on stage. The story of maintaining one’s sparkle and fearless dedication in the face of doubt and unexpected challenges will never go out of style, and neither will a tasteful touch of pink.
