Captains share their responses to the following questions: Why were you chosen as captain? What did you learn about life while doing your sport? What is your favorite sports memory?
Boys Indoor & Beach Volleyball
Liam Knezevic
“I was chosen to be captain because of my hard work and dedication to the game. From working hard in practice and in games, my coaches have seen my ability to lead on the court, which is why I have been captain for two years. Playing volleyball has taught me patience and discipline due to the repetition. Beach volleyball is an easy sport to get in your head, so playing at a high level teaches you to keep your cool and stay calm—even if you are playing poorly. My favorite sports memory would be beating all the public schools in beach volleyball with Tyson. We beat every top-seeded school making us the #1 ranked beach pair in Santa Barbara.”
Tyson Deveze
“For indoor volleyball, I am the captain because I am a senior on the squad, and I have a lot of experience on the team and playing volleyball in club. I learned the importance of balance in my schedule and the ability to manage my time better. My favorite memory from my sporting experience at Laguna was when I scored an own goal in soccer my freshman year.”
Girls Soccer
Tallulah Staeger
“I think I was chosen because I have been on the team since my freshman year and have always made it my priority for the team to have fun and have good sportsmanship. In my four years of soccer, I definitely learned to give it my all and leave it on the field. I learned that you should always work your absolute hardest in everything in life. That way, when you are done, no matter how well you do, you can be proud of yourself. My favorite sporting memory was probably just all the post-away soccer game bus rides with Jose. We would always have fun driving together, laughing, listening to music, and stopping for dinner. A lot of fun memories were formed on those long bus rides together.”
Boys & Girls Golf – Mason Siegel & Luz Schubert
Mason Siegel
“I believe I was chosen as a captain because I have been a staple on the team with my co-captain Jules since our freshman year, and I have proven that I can consistently put in good scores every year. I learned patience and not get frustrated if something goes wrong the first time. I have been playing for over 10 years, and I am always learning new life skills when on the course. My favorite memory definitely has to be making CIF during my junior year and shooting a 79 in the final tournament. It was a great experience playing with the best players in So-Cal.”
Luz Schubert
“I think I was chosen to be the team captain because I have the most experience playing golf. Dr. Yoshimura wanted me to be captain so
I could help encourage and help my teammates to get better. Never let a bad golf shot hang in your mind for more than a second. If I hit a bad shot, I try to get it out of my mind as soon as possible. I think golf taught me how to let go of things that upset me a little bit better, so they do not impact me negatively in the long run. My favorite sporting memory is when I was playing a league match with my sister, and I watched her get a hole-in-one.”
Boys Basketball
Jared Sorensen
“I think I was chosen to be captain because of my being a senior and also because of my devotion to the sport. I learned that a lot of times in life, all you can do is put in the work and make sure your process is good, then hope for the best. I learned not to worry so much about outcomes. My favorite sporting memory at Laguna was junior year when we played at Grace Brethren and had a last-minute crazy comeback to win our league in a super hostile environment.”
