Q: Where did you work before coming Laguna?
A: I’ve been an athletic director since 2004. I worked as an AD at Bishop, La Reina, and Villanova Prep. I worked with Mr Donnelly at Bishop, and he encouraged me to consider Laguna when the position became available – it’s a great opportunity for me to get back into Santa Barbara and work in a great community, where I’ve done most of my athletic directing work.
Q: Could you share any highlights that have shaped how you approach athletics?
A: Athletics was an important part of my educational experience in high school. My hope is that athletics will be an impactful part of students’ development. That’s a big part of my job and Tanner’s work, to make sure that what we offer, the people we put in front of students, are helping them become better. It’s about finding people who get it, and looking at teachable moments in sports and things like that.
Q: What’s the role of an athletic director?
A: It’s like the assistant principal over coaches, which is a good analogy. My primary job is to try to attract and find coaches that will work and provide education-based athletics, have them be in tune with that, and support them to want to continue to work.
Q: What goals do you have for our athletic program in the next few years?
A: My goals would be to increase participation and to make sure that we’re providing education-based athletics and that students are having good experiences as well.
Q: What’s your favorite sport to play or watch?
A: Basketball has always been kind of my first love. I had an opportunity to play in high school and in college.
Q: What are you most excited about as you begin this new chapter here?
A: I’m excited to get my roots into a new community, hopefully for the rest of my working days. I feel blessed to have an opportunity to be part of the Laguna Blanca Community.
