“Bridge Building Contest”
February 2, 2017
“Bridge Building Contest.” (Website here: http://bridgecontestla.org/).
As the name suggests, the goal of the contest is to build the “best” bridge, “best” being judged by how much weight it can hold. The purpose of the contest, as described by the website, is:
“The construction and testing of model bridges promotes the study and application of fundamental principles [of] physics and also helps high school students develop “hands on” skills through bridge construction. By participating in the Bridge Building Competition students get a flavor of what it is to be an Engineer, designing structures to a set of specifications and then seeing them perform their function. They are also provided with an academically-oriented extracurricular activity which is recognized school-wide.”
If you are interested, I have invited a volunteer, Leon, from the regional contest to come and speak at the school about the contest (rules, how to prepare, what is expected, etc.) and answer any questions you may have. He will be on campus in the library at 3:00 after school ends this Friday. Even if you have only a slight interest, you should come to find out more. No former bridge building experience is required (I probably know just as much as you do). His talk should not take longer than 20 to 30 minutes.
If someone gets one of the top two places in this regional contest, they will get to go to the International Bridge Building Contest, (Website here: http://bridgecontest.phys.iit.edu/public/international/2017/international_rules) taking place in Dallas this year.
Thanks,
Sullivan
