If you are receiving this email, your very ambitious and big-hearted child has expressed interest in participating in the service learning opportunity below with the Common Ground Santa Barbara homeless count, Wednesday 1/28 and/or Thursday 1/29, 5 to 8:30 a.m., and with a training on Saturday 1/24 from 10:30 to 1. In order to participate, students need a parent or guardian (or teacher sponsor) to be with them, both for the training and for the survey. During the survey, students would be in groups of 4 or 5 people, with at least 2-3 adults, including one experienced Team Leader who has worked with Common Ground. This is a very ambitious volunteer opportunity for all of the obvious reasons! But we are delighted to have the students participate if everyone is on board the idea. The students would need transportation to and from Earl Warren Showgrounds on Saturday 1/24 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again on Wednesday 1/28 or Thursday 1/29. Common Ground normally expects volunteers to work both mornings, but I asked for special permission for our students to do one morning. They said they can make an exception for the students but would ask us to commit to a few additional volunteer hours (about 3) at a warming shelter during the day or evening hours. I will most likely be going the morning of January 28.

Category A ___ Yes, I am confirming that my child and I (or a guardian) can participate, and I will fill out the online volunteer form asap. I will make arrangements with my child’s A or B period teachers (Wednesday A period 8 to 9:20; Thursday B period 8 to 9:20) since at least half of class will be missed on the day of the survey.
Category B ____Yes, my child can participate but I will not be able to participate. I would be willing to sign a release form that allows a teacher sponsor to be with my child. [[PLEASE NOTE: It will be most likely be a challenge to find more than 1 or 2 faculty sponsors in addition to Ms. Hill, who has already committed to Grace. Charles Donelan may be able to sponsor one student.)
Category C ____ We have thought about and have decided that we are not able to participate this year!
