Let’s be honest, despite our desire to be individuals, we each also find meaning by being part of something bigger than ourselves. This can take many forms: sports teams, clubs, religions, political parties.
I would argue that school community is the single most important example for high-school-age students.
Feeling included in something greater, in this case the larger Laguna community – past, present and future – gives us a sense of well-being. Well-being is directly related to happiness, and we are all more productive when we are happy.
Overall, Laguna students are a remarkable group – we have scholars, artists, athletes, leaders, environmentalists –you name it.
I sincerely believe that as a school we represent the best of what’s around.
But that does not mean that we should become complacent. There is always work to be done.
I think everyone at Laguna would agree that relationships are at the core of the Laguna experience.
From your first day on campus, you become part of the Laguna family.
Family members respect each other.
It is not realistic that we will all be best friends, but it is important that no one feels isolated or alone. We have too much to learn from each other.
I believe being part of any family is a time consuming yet rewarding experience. For all members it requires hard work, constant communication, commitment to something greater than themselves and building strong relationships.
I challenge us all to keep these goals in mind so we can continue to be the best school community on the Central Coast.
