I’m writing to introduce you to several exciting new programs that will be offered at The Webb Schools this summer. In order to take advantage of our incredible campus resources and location, we developed residential summer offerings for both middle- and high-school aged students that I’m eager to share.

We will be welcoming rising 7th and 8th graders to campus for a 10-day Junior Paleontology Program. Webb’s Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology is home to an extraordinary collection of over 150,000 specimens spanning
500 million years of history. We just made the news, in fact, for the newest addition to the museum: a baby hadrosaur fossil discovered by one of our very own students! The Junior Paleontology Program allows students to prospect for fossils in the Barstow desert, pursue hands-on research in our labs, learn new digital technology including 3-D scanning and printing, and study at the Page Museum, the La Brea Tar Pits and Webb’s own Hefner Observatory. As a residential program, we’ll be able to fully immerse our students in science, discovery and in all that Southern California has to offer. There will be pool parties and beach trips, movie nights, talent shows and endless opportunities to explore, create, laugh and learn.

Alongside the excitement at our museum, we’ll also be offering a 3-week Global Leadership Program for rising 9th-12th graders. This program includes two separate tracks in Entrepreneurship and Science & Engineering. What unites these two tracks is their shared focus on helping students develop twenty-first century leadership skills.
Entrepreneurship students learn the principles of design thinking, tap into their curiosity and creativity through start-up challenges, and visit cutting-edge companies in the Los Angeles area. Science & Engineering students study robotics and design, explore our labs, museum and observatory, and visit such institutions as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab and the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences. Both groups have access to an incredible variety of guest speakers and teachers, including Webb alumni and parents from companies like Google, Facebook and Disney.
They’ll also get to have all the fun that living and learning together on a campus like ours makes possible, including weekend field trips, opportunities for sports, extracurriculars and engaging evening programs.
It promises to be a summer experience like none other, combining academic enrichment with access to a global village of passionate, creative teenagers.

Students have the option of staying on campus for a fourth week devoted to the college admission process. Hector Martinez, Webb’s director of college guidance, is recognized as one of America’s most experienced and well-respected college counselors and he brings his expertise to this program. The week includes training in all the key components of an application, workshops with admission representatives from top tier schools, and campus visits. The college process can often seem mysterious and overwhelming. With good cheer and unparalleled knowledge and resources, Martinez helps students gain the skills and confidence to navigate their admission journey with ease.

As educators, we strive to help our students choose meaningful summer experiences that allow them to explore their passions and discover new ones, connect with peers while having some much-needed fun. I hope you keep Webb in mind as one such program. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions or would like additional information.
