Yale University is now accepting applications for the Yale Young Global Scholars Program, which will bring together talented rising high school juniors and seniors from the United States and around the world to live and study at Yale for two weeks in the summer of 2014.
Now in its 13th year, the Yale Young Global Scholars Program features intensive undergraduate-level coursework and interaction with renowned Yale faculty and practitioners in the fields of history, political science, law, economics, international affairs, public health, and environmental science.
Students learn to recognize and understand some of the most pressing global challenges of the 21st century, strategize responses, and innovate solutions, gaining valuable leadership skills both inside and outside the classroom.

This coming summer, the program is introducing a new session focused on science policy, particularly with respect to global health, energy, and climate. The session takes an interdisciplinary approach, combining scientific research and development with public policy applications, and it is designed for students who have broad interests in science and technology, whether they plan to pursue careers in those fields or wish to be science-literate entrepreneurs and policymakers.
“Yale has a long tradition of educating global leaders in virtually every field of endeavor,” said Yale Vice President for Global and Strategic Initiatives Linda Koch Lorimer, who oversees Yale’s Office of International Affairs, which administers the program. “The Yale Young Global Scholars Program extends that leadership training mission to outstanding high school students from around the world. This is a fantastic opportunity for the best and the brightest young people to further improve their analytical thinking, intellectual creativity, and written and oral communication – essential skills that are necessary for college and beyond.”
All three sessions use a combination of lectures, elective seminars, small-group work, and simulation activities that focus on leadership development and emphasize an exploratory and collaborative approach to learning. Each session is limited to 200 students, and participants enjoy the individual attention of a low 6:1 student-to-staff ratio.
“We are looking for 21st-century problem-solvers who relish a challenge and who are eager to work with like-minded colleagues from across the globe,” said program director Ted Wittenstein. “Last summer, over 40% of the Yale Young Global Scholars attended high school outside the United States, representing more than 45 countries. Participants bring a wide array of perspectives into the classroom, fostering international awareness and further enhancing the stellar academic curriculum.”
Ambassador John D. Negroponte, currently a Brady-Johnson Distinguished Fellow in Grand Strategy and Senior Lecturer in International Affairs at Yale, engages a group of Yale Young Global Scholars following a lecture.
Students may apply to any of the three, two-week summer sessions offered: “Science, Policy, and Innovation” (June 16-29) examines interdisciplinary approaches to global health, energy and environment, and climate change; “Politics, Law, and Economics” (July 7-20) focuses on important ideas and thinkers in the American political and intellectual tradition; and “Studies in Grand Strategy” (July 26-August 8) explores strategic lessons from history and their application to contemporary international affairs. Lecturers have included Yale professors Akhil Reed Amar, John Lewis Gaddis, Paul Kennedy, Anthony Kronman, Beverly Gage, William Nordhaus, and Ian Shapiro, among many others.
The application for summer 2014 is now available online, and applications are due Feb. 20. Admission to the program is very selective, and need-based financial aid is available to students who qualify.
