“My mother because she formed every way I approached the world. When I asked my mom why all of daddy’s friends looked funny and she said ‘what are you talking about?’ and I said well their eyes. They all go like this. She said well that’s because he’s Japanese and I said he is? And she said yes and your half Japanese and I said I am and I had no idea at that point that I was Japanese and so that was very defining.”
