THUG — “The Hate U Give”

THUG — “The Hate U Give”. An inspiring, and heart-wrenching novel about 16-year-old Starr Carter. She lives in between two worlds: one where she lives in a poor, predominantly black neighborhood; and one where she goes to a predominantly white prep school. Conflict arises one night when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend, Khalil — her childhood best friend. Starr is then forced to stand up for Khalil and use her voice, even if it puts her and her family’s life in danger.

The book pulls into focus topics such as racism, discrimination, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Freshmen, sophomores, and Humanities students saw the unreleased film based on the novel – The Hate U Give – at Paseo Nuevo Theaters on Friday, September 28. The freshman English class read the novel over the summer and will continue to focus on the book’s big ideas and themes in quarter one.

We would like to give a special thanks to Beth Gabler, president of Fox 2000 Studios of Twentieth-Century Fox, and mother of Annie Gabler, for arranging the advanced screening of the film, “The Hate U Give.”
