What Did You Say: The Bachelor

February 5, 2017

Entering the sixth week of “The Bachelor: Season 21”, there are mixed emotions about the show. A show about finding a spouse has turned into a Monday night marathon for most followers or an eye-roller for those who don’t watch. Certainly an entertaining show, I wanted to learn how Laguna students feel about “The Bachelor”.

A seasoned Bachelor watcher, sophomore Alex Koke said, “I’m obsessed. It’s the only reason I look forward to Mondays.” There is no doubt that a lot of students share the same opinions with Alex, but some think differently.

Sophomore Ty Trosky said, “The Bachelor” is fake, fake, fake. I’d rather watch romcoms than that garbage.”  After talking to students and teachers around the campus, the main point made by them was that “The Bachelor” is “scripted, fake and always has one crazy girl.”

Let’s talk about scripted. “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette” is commonly known for its diabolical drama, interrupting interviews and scripted scenes. But perhaps this is what draws people to the show.

Looking at this season, Corinne Olympios, the 24-year-old multi-million dollar business owner, is turning heads and opening the mouths of every watcher. And, after making a memorable first impression, with the first kiss, with the bachelor and hug tokens, most people now feel uneasy about her and wonder why she has made it on the sixth week of the show. I asked, junior, Kendall White, “Why do you think Corinne is still on the show?” She said, “She’s on “The Bachelor” for viewing purposes and publicity.” Not to fall in love. But will Corinne make it past week seven? To find out what happens next, we will have to tune in next week.
