Shane Lopes, the head football coach as well as the strength and conditioning coach, has taken on a new responsibility in the community as he has agreed to become the new upper school dean of students, in addition to the two athletic roles. So far, he has had the unpleasant role of handing out punishments for being late to class or cutting class. “The unfortunate part is that the transitional period is almost all negative. It’s not always fun to tell the students these kinds of things, but I expected that coming in” said Dean Lopes.
While this transitional period may not be fun for anyone, Lopes is excited to be a resource for the students. “I want to be the person on campus that can be asked questions and provide answers. I want to be an outlet for the students, so that they can communicate through me, to the upper administrators.” The future is definitely bright for the Owl community under the new direction of Lopes.
As a very successful coach and strength and conditioning advisor, he is well-versed in dealing with kids and promoting an effective and positive atmosphere around him.
“My vision is to guide the students along so that they become considerate individuals who are thoughtful to others while also growing themselves for their own futures. Consideration and compassion for others is something I am going to try and instill into the student body. However, I also want students to show effort in everything they do and hold themselves accountable for their actions.”
“It is an honor to serve as dean at Laguna because these kids will one day all become leaders in the area or country or world. I want to help them develop as future leaders, and I want them to know that they can come to me for any questions or concerns they may have.”
