For most elementary school students, summer time means summer camp. Whether you want to play soccer, do science or go swimming, there are a wide variety of camps to choose from; however, this August, one camp had them all. Students, teachers and alumni alike gathered at the Laguna Blanca Lower School Campus for two action-packed weeks of the first annual Summer at Laguna Camp. From magic shows and water worlds to hands-on technology experiments and mini Olympic Games, the campers stayed busy and entertained throughout the day with snacks and recesses to help facilitate the energetic bunch, including nutritious lunches catered by Silver Greens. As the campers enjoyed their lunches, the counselors eagerly set up the day’s afternoon activities on the backfield.Lower School and Camp Head Andy Serber assembled his team of about 10 teachers for the camp expecting a good turnout, but as the sign ups stacked up, he knew he needed some extra help. Who better to help out then middle and high school students who went to the Lower School themselves? Each teacher taught a specific class such as PE, science, technology, art, and music or led one of the four age groups with one or two high school helpers. The ‘big helpers’ assisted the little kids with activities and familiarized the campers with the campus.Almost 70 percent of the campers were non-Laguna students or incoming new students. Each week culminated in a musical performance and an expo of the campers work for the week. While their parents watched and waved, the campers performed a set list of songs including “Baby Beluga” and “Under the Sea” during the “Under the Sea” themed week and “Life is a Highway” and “Frère Jacques” in the “Around the World” week.“Seeing the looks on [the parents’] faces really put how much these kids accomplished in just five short days all into perspective, especially with all the fun we were having along the way,” high school counselor Javier Abrego said.
