The 2020 Grammys Review
February 3, 2020
The 2020 Grammys was a rollercoaster of ups and downs, to say the least. With the death of Kobe Bryant the morning of, as well as the death of Los Angeles rapper Nipsey Hussle a few months prior, the event dealt with the heavy hearts within the audience, as well as across the nation. However, that did not stop records from being broken whatsoever. Billie Eilish became the first artist since 1981 to sweep the big four awards (Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artists, and Album of the Year), and also became the youngest to do so in history. J. Cole won his first Grammy for his verse on 21 Savage’s “A Lot.” In addition, Tyler, the Creator won Best Rap Album, yet was critical of the fact that his album was placed into the rap category, stating, “On one side, I’m very grateful that what I made could just be acknowledged in a world like this. But also, it sucks that whenever we, and I mean guys that look like me, do anything that’s genre-bending, they always put it in a ‘rap’ or ‘urban’ category.” This argument has been prevalent in the music industry for many years now, and as we begin to see more and more artists morph genres and bend the “rules” of music, Tyler’s point becomes more real. Either way, 2020 is set to be another historic year for music, and next year’s Grammys should have its fair share of broken records.
