The Fourth Estate

Interview with Mike Janey and Charlotte Mush

Frances Carlson

Here are the responses of ninth grade girls, Mike Janey and Charlotte Mush, during an interview about their move from Belgium to California.

When and why did you move?

Mike:

July 25 and because my parents wanted me to go to high school in America.

Charlotte:

July 2 because it has always been a dream of mine. The Californian environment is so great!

What made you decide to go to Laguna?

Mike:

I was looking at the website with my parents and said: “that’s the school I’m going to go to.” We visited twice, and I really liked it, and the fantastic community made the final decision.

Charlotte:

We also looked online and then heard from Mike. I shadowed for a day, and that decided it.

How was that experience of moving?

Mike:

I didn’t want to leave my friends, but so happy we’re here.

Charlotte:

My experience was similar. But, it is hard because my dogs are still in Holland because we don’t want them to go under the plane.

What are the biggest differences between California vs. Belgium?

Both:

So many. Weather is much prettier, people are way friendlier here, and the food is better with more choices, but not as healthy.

What were your initial feelings about Laguna? Have those feelings changed now that we are further into the school year?

Both:

Excited, but a little bit nervous at first. Now much more comfortable!

What are your favorite things about Santa Barbara?

Mike:

Access to literally everything you would need and LA!

Charlotte:

I love being so close to the beach and stores close later.

Anything to add?

Both:

Laguna is awesome!
