After an international manhunt, fugitive Salah Abdeslam was captured alive by the police in Brussels, Belgium. The last surviving attacker from the notorious Paris attacks late last year, Abdeslam was shot in the leg and finally taken in. He is the fifth perpetrator captured associated with the Paris raid, and police waited for over an hour before being able to immobilize him with a bullet to the leg.

The police were joined by the army, and were reported to apparently have used grenades to smoke Abdeslam out of where he was holed up. Abdeslam has been called to be extradited to France to face trial, and French President François Hollande said that “[He] know[s] the Belgian authorities will respond quickly and favorably to [their] request for extradition.”

Abdeslam has been evading officials in Brussels for months, and Foreign Affairs Minister Didier Reynders says that they “will have to examine” the possibility that Abdeslam made use of a criminal network of accomplices. Reynders adds that “There will probably be other people to track down. The threat we are confronted to is similar to the November Paris attacks. It’s often several teams with heavy weaponry.”

While tensions are still high across the world after such emotionally devastating attacks, over one hundred home searches have been done, and authorities have made fifty-eight related arrests. Hopefully, Abdeslam was the last key player needed to be arrested, but authorities are cautious to the possibility of accomplices still at large.
