First Ever All-School Field Day Unites the Owl Community

Early Kindergartners to Seniors flocked to the fields for the first ever all-school and fifth annual Field Day on the sunny spring morning of March 6. Head of School Rob Hereford proposed the idea for the first all school field day. He has experience with all-school field days, as his former school conducted a similar event. Though in the past years the students have been divided into four teams, the event expanded to six teams each with four sub-teams captained by an upperclassmen and a faculty advisor to accommodate the greater number of participants.

Before the main competitive events kicked off, the students were divided into grade levels to compete in grade level specific events. Grades EK-2 started with the balloon toss. Grades 3-5 started with the obstacle course, and grades 6-8 began with ‘prisoner ball.’ The high-schoolers headed to the gym for two games of dodgeball: ninth versus tenth grade and eleventh versus twelfth grade. The ninth andjojo ryanfootballfielddaytwelfth grades came out victorious. Following the grade-level-specific activities, the entire student body came back together to organize into the respective teams: Yellow, Red, Pink, Green, Gray and Blue. Each sub-team, which was comprised of a student from each grade, of each greater team rotated through the four competitive events of the Field Day.

The teams played flag football, 9-on-9 soccer, knock-out and the Laguna-classic ‘Prisoner Ball.’ The winning team of each event received a total of three points for its team, while the losing team earned one point. The Yellow team was named the Champion of Field Day 2015. “Overall the Yellow team was obviously dominant,” Yellow team captain Ryan Bickett ’15 said. “We had the superior athleticism and heart to win this thing. I had faith in my team that we would make it to the promise-land and we did. It was a very enjoyable and spirited field day. I had a lot a fun.” After the competitive team-events came to a close, students were allowed to use the slip ‘n’ slide, a recurring hit from last year, and an inflatable ‘bouncy’ water slide. Lunch was provided and served by the Parents’ Auxiliary. “I think the addition of the other divisions creates a feeling of a stronger community,” Athletic Director Mike Biermann said. “It’s great seeing the high school kids interacting with the Lower School.”
